Bachata is a style of dance that accompanies the music of the same name. It has its origins in the Dominican Republic, and in recent times has spread with passion all over the world.
The style developed in Europe and US bringing forth a variety of styles:
- Traditional
- Moderna
- Bachatango
- Dominican
This style is usually a close contact dance, and is very sensual and sometimes slow in pace.
The Bachata dance consists of three steps to one side with an exaggerated ‘hip’ lift at the end of the half bar, then it is reversed into the opposite direction finishing with another exaggerated ‘hip’ lift. It is danced to 4/4 time (four beats to a measure).
The dancers' hips are relaxed to allow a free movement in the pelvic section characterized by the swinging hips called "Cuban Motion".
Whether it be Dominican, Modern, Italian, Spanish or as we do it Oz style, Bachata is a beautiful and fun dance to learn.
